Coloring Pete The Cat

At any given day when we’re hanging out at home, you can find Noah huddled on my kitchen floor.  This kid loves to color.  And oh boy he is good… takes to it like a duck in water.  Pete the Cat is a favorite here, and my mom drew this awesome coloring page for my boys (she rocks).

I’m just amazed by Noah’s coloring skills.  His ability to color evenly, stay within lines, and be intently focused on his projects started many months ago at 3 years old (he just turned 4 a few weeks ago).  And he just loves to color on the floor… he’ll take it over a table and chair anyday.

On a random afternoon a few weeks ago, I grabbed my camera to capture him in action.  He was already in the zone, and I snuck into my office for my camera and luckily didn’t disturb him when I came back into the room.  I love it when they could care less about my camera.

I love capturing real life.  Now I’ll always have these images to remember his little self and mannerisms… like how he hold the marker cap and how he wiggles his toes when he colors.

Capturing moments like this really sing to my heart.  Because they’re real.  Because they’re natural.  Because this is really him, doing exactly what he loves, how he pleases.  Nothing posed, nothing forced.  I didn’t ask him to change his outfit. I didn’t try fixing his hair.  I didn’t wipe lunchtime crumbs off his face.  My house isn’t perfectly clean.  I didn’t change the location where he was coloring because of whatever looks unpleasant in the background or to avoid the greencast (which, for the record, drives me absolutely b-a-n-a-n-a-s) – it’s greenish shadows cast on everything because of the grass & trees outside, his green shirt, and green chair.  I just let him be.

And because of all of those reasons, these images are imperfectly perfect to me…

How he holds the cap… his little fingers… it makes my heart skip a beat.Lukas’ masterpiece…And just sometimes, coloring can make a boy sleepy-tired…
Hey – I totally get it.  It’s nice to rest the eyes a bit after concentrating for awhile.  As Pete would say, “It’s ALLLLL good.”  😉
